Workshops Workshops scheduled in Europe this spring & summer; Contact Improvisation and Mind in Motion Workshops in the Bay Area are scheduled for May 22-27 and August 11-15. See below. May 22 27 Info/contact: ilkafanni@hotmail.com Mind in Motion: Introduction An advanced workshop to study the levels and states of mind that influence movement “So my point is simply that the intellect is not something cut off from every other kind of experience, existing in a kind of abstract vacuum which has nothing to do with anything else. The intellect is part and parcel of the whole fabric of life. It goes along with your fingers; it goes along with being able to touch. After all, what an intellectual thing in a way the human hand is.” --Alan Watts
The mind is boundless in its nature. The body is bound. Human experience is composed of both. Holding these natures separately we limit our potential. When we infuse the one with the other, experience expands and extends. For dancers, the range of physical language and creative expression is in direct relationship to the character of this union. This workshop explores ways our mind can suffuse our body with its boundless nature expanding its bound potential, until something new exists. The mind, like the body, is an instrument, only when you know how to play it. When we engage both the mind and the body instruments as one, we are working on transcendent levels. Knowing the moving mind increases dancer's potential on almost every level: technical and performative skills; material, creative process and communication; and internal and external experiential relationships. Collaboration takes on new meaning when the mind is involved in its creative rather than reactive, and even responsive modes. Come to engage in the growing meaning of mindfulness and receive support for the acquisition of a potent mind/body relationship that transcends cultural bounds and definitions. There will be some discussions, a great deal of moving, some attention to technical skills and creative work resulting in dance making. We will respect intimate territories, be mutually supportive as we enter new realms of exploration and play, and have a small informal showing at the end. Your presence will not only be greatly appreciated, it will be honored and respected as the means by which magic happens. August 11-15 Mind in Motion with contact improvisation: Touching Mind, Touching Body, Moving Grace This improvisation workshop is based in the study of Mind in Motion and is inclusive of contact improvisation. Designed for dancer/movers who wish to extend their physical skill and creative aperture through expanding their mental acuity, accuracy, clarity and range. We will push the common cultural and creative boundaries of the mind/body interface and freely incorporate into our dance relationships all levels of this continuum, challenging the flexibility of our “states of mind/states of body”. This workshop will be skills based and creatively oriented. It concludes with an open showing. |
